What Ricoh is good at

Written for buyers in Kenya — what the range actually does well, and where it stops being the right machine.

Ricoh has been in Kenyan offices longer than almost any other copier brand, and it shows. Walk into a government department, a school bursary or an accounts office and there is a fair chance the machine in the corner has an Aficio badge on it and has been running for a decade.

That longevity is the reason to buy Ricoh, and the reason a refurbished Ricoh is such a good buy. These are mechanically conservative machines: heavy-duty feed systems, straightforward toner delivery, and consumables that stayed in production long after the model stopped shipping. A well-prepared MP C2503 or SP 5210 will do years of ordinary office work for a fraction of what an equivalent new machine costs.

Ricoh MFPs are known for long service lives and forgiving paper handling — the reason so many Aficio machines are still in daily use here.

Choosing a model

Which Ricoh fits your office?

Ricoh naming has changed three times, which confuses buyers more than it should. Aficio was the long-running brand name; MP and MP C were the generation after it; IM and IM C are the current machines. A "C" always means colour, and SP marks the A4 laser range.

Ricoh codes come in two shapes. The older mono machines take a four-character code stamped on the bottle — 1230D, 1270D, 2220D. The newer machines are named after the model they fit, so an MP C2503 takes an MPC-2503 cartridge and an IM C3000 takes an IMC-6000.

How to read these prices: Colour MPC and IMC codes are sold as four separate cartridges — black, cyan, magenta and yellow — and the price shown is for one cartridge. The mono D-codes are a single black unit.

The three questions that come up on WhatsApp most often about Ricoh machines and cartridges.

Aficio, MP, IM — what is the difference?

They are three eras of the same product line. Aficio was Ricoh’s brand name for its copiers and multifunction printers for many years; MP and MP C machines followed; the current generation is branded IM and IM C. A machine badged "Aficio MP C2503" belongs to the MP generation. The naming does not change what you need to know to buy: "C" means colour, SP means A4 laser, and the number tells you roughly how fast it is.

Which Ricoh toner code do I need?

For older mono Aficio machines, look for a four-character code on the toner bottle: 1230D fits the Aficio 2015, 2018 and MP 2000; 2220D fits the Aficio 1022, 2027, 3025 and 3030. Newer machines take a cartridge named after the model — MPC-2503 for the MP C2003, C2004, C2503 and C2504, IMC-6000 for the IM C range. If in doubt, read the model badge on the front of the machine and send it to us on WhatsApp.

Is a refurbished Ricoh a safe buy for an office?

For most Kenyan offices it is the best value on the floor. Ricoh platforms ran for years, which means parts and toner are still readily available and a technician who knows the machine can keep it running. We prepare, test and print-check every refurbished unit before it leaves us, and we service what we sell. If you want a new machine instead, the IM mono range is the current equivalent — ask us for both prices and decide with the numbers in front of you.
